OUT OF THE SUN

Brambus 2010 57-2 (CD.)

They have holes in their shoes, dust in their pockets, and a touch of loneliness', says the English singer-songwriter about his songs, strolling between folk and blues. But the songs range from biting humour, philosophical poetry and story-telling talent. And that's what's presented, at its best, on this CD.

Schweizer Familie Medientips - Heinz Storrer. Switzerland

There are traditionally nine Muses, and this is my ninth album, making a total of one hundred and thirty of my songs recorded and released since The Lady in 1984. At one time or another over the past thirty-five years each of the various creative specialities of these celestial ladies has been invoked and, I hope, to some degree expressed. I therefore dedicate my personal ennead to these eternal inspirers of poetry and song.

With a count of sixteen tracks OUT OF THE SUN is the usual eclectic mix; from dry, biting satire (Bad News Boogie); to the world of myth (Stairway and Snow Queen); from hard political comment (Winging Home); to alchemy (Out of the Sun). It weaves through the Blues (Pessimism Blues and Strange Affair); to lyrical romance (Turn to me and The Wind's Harp). And I couldn’t resist including the mischievously un-PC Beachwear Calypso. There’s even an instrumental (Ericusa). Would you be surprised to hear that track 13 (Reflections), is a Spencerian sonnet about the fickleness of mirrors, composed while waiting in the dentist's chair?

As ever my acoustic guitar, blues harp and vocals comprise the heart of the album; but the wonder-working production skills, electric guitar, bass and percussion of Ljubo Majstorovic, together with Sandro Friedrich's inspired wind instruments and Chris Leslie's eloquent fiddle ensure that there is always a refreshing variety of mood.

'Your own dark shadow is where you sleep,

and the gold you sow is the gold you reap,

but when you wake up you can’t keep

out of the sun.'
