Brambus 2001 51-2 (CD.)

Cowlan goes through the world with keen eyes, lays a finger in the wounds of a society with increasingly questionable values, but among all horrors of politics, pubs and TV programmes he never loses that sense of humour for which his homeland is so affectionately well-known.

Speyer Tagepost, Musik Szene, Germany

The cover photo? Not a 'gangster' exactly, but a crook of sorts, a witless culture-vandal; the kind of tourist who would really be much happier watching a video, or better still an interactive 3-D, virtual-reality playback, of their chosen holiday destination, rather than actually visiting it. They could then switch off, 'fast forward' or channel-hop whenever there were unwanted intrusions or tiresome developments, such as local customs, local people, local smells, local poverty etc. Hence the CD's name.

But that's just the title track. In addition; Don Juan receives unwelcome enlightenment; there's a rather disturbing little ape tapping at the mirror; a witless wannabe; the TV's on again, and it's not Brain of Britain; there's a love song or two, and suicidal hatred. An old man chooses his own flight path; someone wins against the odds. Then a commercial break; followed by tub-thumpers and poets in The Park, and the voice of dangerously specious politics. The wind picks up, and the admiral sets sail for the stars; a young man goes 'missing in action'; the golden bowl is broken.

'Tune in those cosy harbours, tune in the shopping trips;

tune out the slums and garbage, and dictatorships.

Tune out polluted beaches, tune out the urban hells;

tune in the tourist hotels and the bonus features.'
